Turkish Culinary Tour

Description

Day 1 – Istanbul

Arrive and transfer to your hotel.  The rest of the day is free for you to explore. Your Turkish culinary tour officially begins tonight when you meet your tour guide. After a short orientation meeting, head to dinner at a restaurant specialising in traditional Ottoman cuisine.

Day 2 – Istanbul

Today we tour Istanbul old city. Highlights include Topkapi Palace, the Hagia Sophia, the Hippodrome, the Blue Mosque and Grand Bazaar. Tonight, a light dinner in one of the city’s most popular fish restaurants.  Finish the night with a stop at a famous dessert restaurant on our way back to the hotel.

Day 3 – Istanbul

This morning we will participate in a cooking class. We will prepare a five course, traditional Turkish meal together, then enjoy it with a glass of wine.  Walk off lunch with a visit to the Spice Bazaar. Tonight, we head off to a traditional Turkish Meyhane, a restaurant serving wine, raki and beer with meze.

Day 4 – Istanbul to Cappadocia 

After breakfast, we fly to Kayseri, and drive to Cappadocia. Visit Goreme Open Air Museum which consists of a cluster of rock-cut churches, chapels and monasteries. Afterwards, we visit Rose and Devrent Valleys. Our final stop of the day will be at a local winery for a wine tasting. Tonight we will taste manti, a specialty dish in this region often likened to ravioli.

Day 5 –Cappadocia 

This morning take an optional one hour hot air balloon ride at sunrise. This is an experience you will never forget. Today, we will visit a local carpet weaving cooperative and learn about this dying art. We then continue sightseeing in this incredible region. A highlight will be a visit to one of the area’s many underground cities. Afternoon cooking demonstration, followed by a simple but tasty home cooked dinner with a local family.

Day 6 – Cappadocia to Konya 

This morning we set off for Konya, stopping to visit Sultanhani Caravansary. Konya is where Rumi, a 13th-century Persian poet and Sufi mystic, spent most of his years. Here, we visit the Mevlana Museum, and finish our day with a visit to the bustling Konya market. Tonight, dinner is at a simple local restaurant where we will taste on of the area’s specialty dishes. Konyali etli ekmek is like a very thin pide topped with finely ground minced meat and simple spices. It’s a great example of how spices can gently draw out flavours in a dish.

Day 7 – Konya to Pamukkale

After breakfast, we drive five hours to Pamukkale, home of the incredible natural wonder that is the travertine pools. Late afternoon visit to the travertines and the ruins of the ancient Roman spa town of Hierapolis.

Day 8 – Pamukkale to Kusadasi

This morning we drive towards Secuk, where will visit the House of Virgin Mary, believed to be where she spent her last days. Afterwards, we will drive to Sirince, a charming former Greek village.  Lunch will be at a restaurant that specialises in home-style cooking. Our next stop is at a local winery. Taste some of the fruit wines for which Sirince is famous.  Tonight you are free to explore Kusadasi’s many great restaurants and charming old town area.

Day 9 – Kusadasi / Ephesus

This morning, we visit Ephesus, one of the world’s premiere archaeological sites. A highlight will be the grand theatre, which is still used for concerts today. After lunch, we will visit the Oleatrium, an olive and olive oil museum. Learn about the importance of olives throughout the last 2500 years. Visit a local farm where you will learn how they make jams and preserves and dry their vegetables under the sun. Drive back to the hotel. Free night.
Overnight Kusadasi (B/L/-)

Day 10 – Kusadasi to Istanbul

This morning we will drive  to Izmir Airport for our flight back to Istanbul.  This afternoon, we catch a ferry over to Kadikoy on Istanbul’s Asian side. Here, we will explore the local fish market and see life away from the tourist areas. Back to the hotel to freshen up before our farewell dinner.

Day 11 – Istanbul

Your Turkish culinary tour concludes after breakfast. Transfer to the airport.
